Christmas on the Alentejo coast doesn't look like the big-city markets you see in travel magazines.

There are no endless rows of identical stalls and no crowds pushing past each other.

What you'll find instead is smaller, warmer and very local: handmade crafts, regional food, live music and neighbours who stop to chat.

Here's what to expect from the Christmas markets in Sines and Santiago do Cacém, and how to turn a December visit into a slow winter weekend.

Christmas in Sines: The Castle Fair

Every December, the castle and historic centre of Sines are transformed for the town's Christmas fair.

This year, the Feira de Natal runs from 5 to 8 December around the castle and the historic centre. There'll be a traditional market, rides and games, Santa's house, workshops and shows, and entry is free.

Last year, the market had around 70 stalls selling regional products, crafts and handmade gifts, along with an ice rink and a free concert every evening.

Even if you're not looking for gifts, it's worth going just to wander the old streets under the lights, with the castle above you and the bay just below.

  • Where: castle and historic centre of Sines
  • Entry: free

The full programme will be announced closer to the date in the Sines municipal agenda.

More Christmas Around Sines

If you're staying longer, there's more happening nearby:

  • Um Natal Barroco e Português (11 December, 21:00): the Algarve Camerata and around forty musicians perform Vivaldi, Bach and traditional Alentejo and Algarve Christmas carols, and the night ends with the whole audience singing. The venue is still to be announced.
  • Feira de Natal in Porto Covo (12–13 December): a small Christmas market in Largo Marquês de Pombal, the pretty square at the heart of the village. It's about a 15-minute drive down the coast from Sines.
  • Christmas concert by Coral Atlântico (20 December, 21:00): two choirs singing film music at the Centro de Artes de Sines. Tickets go on sale closer to the date.

Christmas in Santiago do Cacém: The Mercadinhos de Natal

Up the road in Santiago do Cacém, Christmas is quieter and very local.

The municipality's Mercadinhos de Natal are small Christmas markets showcasing local artisans and the best regional products. This year there are two:

  • 4–6 December, Santiago do Cacém: in the Jardim Municipal, the town garden.
  • 11–13 December, Vila Nova de Santo André: in the Parque Central.

Both are open from 10:00 to 18:00.

It's the kind of market where you'll bump into half the town, grab something warm to drink, and leave with a jar of local honey you didn't know you needed.

Afterwards, walk up through the old town to the castle. On a clear winter afternoon, the views over the countryside towards the coast are beautiful.

Good to know: the first weekend of December is the only weekend when both towns hold their markets. You could do Santiago do Cacém by day and Sines under the lights in the evening.

What to Buy: Local Gifts from the Alentejo

If you want to bring a piece of the Alentejo home, look out for:

  • Olive oil from this year's harvest.
  • Cork products, from bags and wallets to homeware. Here's where cork comes from.
  • Honey, jams and sweets made in the region.
  • Ceramics and handmade crafts from local artisans.
  • Alentejo wine, of course.

Buying from small local producers is one of the easiest ways to support the communities that make this region special.

A Slow Winter Weekend on the Alentejo Coast

December is one of our favourite months here.

The beaches are empty, but the light is beautiful and the sea is still there for a brisk morning walk or a winter surf.

Restaurants are calm. Fireplaces are lit. Days are short, but they feel full.

“Every year we have an annual friends' winter retreat in Sines. It's a different vibe to our summer gathering, but it's just as needed, if not more. Usually we get amazing waves, stop at a local restaurant for some fresh fish, and just lounge in our PJs on the sofa and the balcony, ending the day with a movie on the projector.”

Planning Your December Weekend

A slow December weekend could look like this:

  • Friday: arrive, light the fire, dinner at home.
  • Saturday: a drive inland to the Mercadinho de Natal in Santiago do Cacém's town garden, lunch in the countryside, then back to Sines for the Christmas fair and an evening under the castle lights.
  • Sunday: a long beach walk, a slow breakfast, and one last wander through the fair before heading home.

On the first weekend of December (4–6 December), both markets are open at the same time.

If you're coming with family or friends for the holidays, the Sines House can welcome groups of up to 14. The Santiago House is perfect for a quieter escape for up to 4.
